When Can I Stop Wearing a Bra After Breast Augmentation?
Recently, one of our readers asked in the comment section of this blog: “When can I stop wearing a bra after breast augmentation?” We’ve seen this question asked multiple times and today, we have an answer for you.
The harsh reality of being a woman is you have to constantly wear a bra, especially in formal settings. Even after breast augmentation, you cannot stop wearing bras as you’ll need them for support, shaping and comfort.
Bras play an important role both pre- and post-op for optimal healing and recovery. In this case, a post-surgery compression bra would be ideal to prevent swelling, loss of muscle mass and implant shifting. They might not be stylish but are very practical.

When Can I Stop Wearing a Bra After Breast Augmentation?
Technically, you can’t!
Immediately after the procedure, your breast tissue will feel tender and swollen, which is quite normal. Besides, the implants will take some time before they finally settle in position. At this point, you’ll need a surgical compression bra to protect your breasts from any potential harm and ease the recovery process since its more stable. It also helps prevent bounce while keeping the implants in place as the incisions heal.
You’ll need to wear the post-surgical bra 24 hours a day for about two weeks. You can take it off to shower or launder.
The surgical compression bra should have a snug fit and not sit too close to the breasts. It’s meant to provide the right amount of pressure so ensure you are wearing the correct size. The bras are usually made of high-quality materials that create pressure in certain areas of the arms and chest.
After the two weeks, you can transition to a different bra style. However, steer clear of underwire bras as they can poke the incision area and can cause more harm than just poking. Also, you’ll have to wear the bra for 24 hours.
You can stop wearing your bra to bed four weeks after breast augmentation surgery. However, you’ll still need to keep wearing them regularly for two months all day long.
When to Wear Regular Bras: 4-6 Weeks
Generally, women are able to wear regular bras about four to six weeks after breast augmentation. However, you’ll need to wait longer than three months to shop for new bras.
However, the rate of healing differs from one patient to the other which means the transitioning timeline from compression to regular bras is not the same. During this period, avoid doing any strenuous activities to protect yourself.
It’s only natural that you want to show off the results after your cosmetic surgery by going braless. But it’s not advisable especially before six weeks post-op. Not wearing a bra makes you susceptible to implant slipping and sliding also known as breast implant dislocation.
When can I stop wearing a bra after breast augmentation? Sometimes after six weeks. However, do it moderately. Don’t make going braless a habit.
