Why Does My Bra Smell Like Ammonia?
Recently, we got a question from one member of our community in the Facebook group. The question was; Why does my bra smell like ammonia? If you also have this question, this article is for you.
Have you evert noticed that some bras tend to develop a pungent smell like ammonia after several wears? Well, this is not strange.
The ammonia odor is usually emitted as a result of having lower carbohydrate reserves meant to burn protein. The smell is especially common among runners or women who’ve just engaged in an intense workout. The smell is produced by your body. However, since you are sweating, the sweat is bound to get absorbed by the bra. This is why the bra may smell like ammonia.
If the glucose level fueling the muscles runs low, it typically reverts to metabolizing protein. Ammonia is converted to urea during protein breakdown for muscle energy. However, when exercising, the amount produced outstrips this conversion amount, thus increasing its level in the body.
Ammonia is a byproduct of protein breakdown in the body. The excess ammonia is harmful, and is removed from your system through sweat. This often happens to people that eat high protein and low carbs diet.
When ammonia concentration in your sweat rises, you will feel the smell on your bras. A quick fix to this problem is increasing carbohydrates in your meals and drinking a lot of water in the course of the day to dilute the level of ammonia.
Ammonia smell is also associated with kidney and liver disease. Therefore, it would be best if you seek medical attention if our recommended fix doesn’t solve your problem.
Dehydration is a contributing factor as well since it makes your sweat to be more concentrated, and in turn transferring the smell to your bra. Also, if your urine color is anything between yellow to brown, that’s a clear indication that you are dehydrated and could also be a reason of the odor.
The ammonia smell in sweat is not healthy or normal. Something is definitely wrong if you notice this odor in your bras. As earlier mentioned, add potatoes, pasta, rice, bread and whole fruits to your diet to fix the problem. Those with active lifestyles and engage in intense workouts should do carb-heavy sports bars and drinks to help the body avoid protein breakdown switch.
Eating a balanced diet will not only help you maintain a healthy lifestyle but also keep your bras odor free. Be careful with what you put in your body.
